Care Induction

The Common Induction Standards (CIS) are a requirement and have been designed to provide a structured start for new care workers in the first 12 weeks of employment.  Managers have a duty to ensure new staff know enough to meet the requirements of each knowledge area.

The 12-week CIS induction period will enable care workers to give high quality care and support.  It also provides recognition for their work and prepares them for entry onto NVQ Health and Social Care programmes.

From June 2010 there are eight Common Induction Standards:

Role of the health and social care worker
  Personal development
  Communicate effectively
  Equality and inclusion
Principles for implementing duty of care
Principles of safeguarding in health and social care
  Person-centred support
Health and safety in an adult social care setting

Each standard contains a number of areas of knowledge that care workers need to know about before they can work unsupervised.  Managers have a duty to ensure that new staff know enough to meet the required outcomes in each knowledge area.  The CIS provide a structured start for new care staff.  This, alongside opportunities for professional development, plays an important part in improved staff retention.

Below is a link to the skills for care website:

http://sfcnational.activclient.com/entry_to_social_care/common_induction_standards.aspx

At Rapido Training we deliver a distance learning programme covering the knowledge required in the eight common induction standards as well as offering the mandatory training courses required as part of this induction.  These are Emergency First Aid at Work, Food Hygiene Foundation Certificate (if working with food), Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults and Moving & Handling Induction.
